Niels has been a core faculty member in the School of Leadership Studies at Royal Roads University since 2007, and is Program Head for the Graduate Certificate in Leadership. Previously a consultant in cultural competency in health care and organization development, in the 1980s and 90s, Niels has been studying and writing about topics including: inclusive and engaged leadership; "action research engagement"; orientations to possibility, including appreciative inquiry; research ethics; and the world cafe and other dialogic group approaches to change. Niels's recent publications include a forthcoming chapter (with Brigitte Harris) on "Dialogic Change and the Practice of Inclusive Leadership" in the book, Breaking the Zero-Sum Game: Transforming Societies through Inclusive Leadership, to be published by Jossey-Bass in 2017, and three chapters in a book he also co-edited, Engaging Students in Life-Changing Learning: The Royal Roads University Learning and Teaching Model In Practice, published by RRU in 2016.
